1/ Who gave you your name? 

I think it was my parents who gave it to me when I was born. But actually, there was some kind of debate about what I should be called. My grandparents and parents had different ideas. But finally, they all agreed that they wanted a name that sounded beautiful and trendy at that time.

2/ Does your name have any particular/special meaning?

Actually, yes. My parents told me that they didn’t choose my name out of nowhere. My name is Hạnh, which means "happiness" in Vietnamese because my parents hoped that I would always be happy and could bring joy and positivity to others. Another reason that not many people know is that my parents named me after my mom’s best friend, who was a respected and kind-hearted woman.

3/ Did your family refer to you by a nickname when you were a kid?

No. They simply referred to me as “Chau.” In some families, I believe parents would give their children a nickname, but that is not the case in my family.

4/ What do your friends call you?

My friends call me by my first name, but some of them who are really close to me use a nickname instead. I prefer to be called by my first name because I only want my closest friends to call me by my nickname, but I don't mind if someone uses a nickname for me as long as it's respectful.

5/ Would you like to change your name? 

No, I would not even if I could. It is a part of my identity and has been with me ever since I was born. And it does sound good. However, there are several names that I really hate. I would consider changing my name if it is on that blacklist.

6/ Is it easy to change your name in your country?

In Vietnam, it is possible to change your name, but it requires a legal process and can be complicated and time-consuming. The government will then review the request and make a decision based on various factors, such as the reason for the name change and whether it is in the best interest of the petitioner.

7/ In your country, do people feel that their names are very important? 

I think so. In Vietnam, names are very important because they are believed to have a strong influence on a person's destiny and future. That’s actually true for my cousin, whose name means “Glory”. He was very successful in his career. That’s why many parents spend a lot of time researching and choosing a name that they believe will bring good luck and success to their child.

8/ What are the most popular baby names in your country?

People seem to prefer names like Linh or Trang for girls – I’m not sure what those names mean. Son, which means mountain, and Hieu, which means to show affection and respect to their parents, are the two most popular names for boys, in my opinion.
